South Carolina is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. A current APRN South Carolina or temporary license is required to practice advanced nursing in this state. South Carolina practice agreement

The South Carolina practice agreement is a written agreement developed between an NP and physician or medical staff who work with and support the NP. This agreement must establish the medical aspects of care provided by the NP and includes prescribing medication. In the state of South Carolina, nurse practitioners are required to submit a prescriptive authority application after completing 45 contact hours of education in pharmacotherapeutics acceptable to the board within two years before application. Of the 45 contact hours, at least 15 of the 20 hours should be in controlled substances. New graduates (who graduated within two years before the application) who have completed a graduate-level pharmacology course meet these educational requirements for prescriptive authority and controlled substances (South Carolina board of nursing SCLLR. (n.d.). Drugs and devices prescribed must be within the NP’s specialty and listed in the written protocol developed by the NP and the supervising physician. An NP may also prescribe Schedules II-V. In South Carolina NP are allowed to prescribe a 5-day supply of schedule II, a 30-day supply of schedule 2N, and can prescribe schedule III, 3N, IV, V (Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), 2021).
