  • What are the steps in hypothesis testing?
  • What is the goal of hypothesis testing?
  • What are null and alternative hypotheses?
  • In §9.2 the concepts of Type I and Type II errors are introduced.Consider the situation where a husband and wife go to the doctor’s office to each get some tests run and the doctor accidentally mixes up their charts. The doctor comes into the exam room with the results of the tests and declares that the wife is NOT pregnant but her husband IS indeed pregnant with a baby.
  • How does this illustrate the concepts behind Type I and Type II errors? Make sure to state your null hypothesis for this situation when discussing error.

COLLAPSE

What are the steps in hypothesis testing?

  • Hypotheses
  • Significance
  • Sample
  • P-value
  • Decide

What is the goal of hypothesis testing?

The purpose of hypotheses testing is to determine whether there is enough statistical evidence in favor of a certain belief about a parameter.

What are null and alternative hypotheses?

Null hypotheses – states that the population parameter is equal to the hypothesized value.

Alternative hypotheses – states that the population parameter is greater, smaller, or just different from the hypothesized value in the null hypotheses.

How does the situation illustrate the concepts behind Type I and Type II errors?

Type I error – When the null hypotheses is true but rejected

Type II error – When the null hypotheses is false but accepted

This situation describes a Type II error because the null hypotheses (man is pregnant) was accepted by the doctor, when in fact this hypotheses is false.

Week 6

COLLAPSE

  • What are the steps in hypothesis testing?

Hypotheses, significance, sample, p-value and decide

  • What is the goal of hypothesis testing? Is to determine if a statement is null and void or true
  • What are null and alternative hypotheses? The dictionary definition of a Null hypothesis is that there is no significant difference between specified populations, any observed difference being due to sampling or experimental error. The dictionary states that an Alternative Hypothesis is a position that states something is happening, new theory is preferred over an old one.
  • In §9.2 the concepts of Type I and Type II errors are introduced. Consider the situation where a husband and wife go to the doctor’s office to each get some tests run and the doctor accidentally mixes up their charts. The doctor comes into the exam room with the results of the tests and declares that the wife is NOT pregnant but her husband IS indeed pregnant with a baby. Man getting pregnant would be null as men can not conceive children. The alternative hypothesis is the Dr. stating the man is pregnant. This is a Type I error because Type II error is when you accept the incorrect error.
  • How does this illustrate the concepts behind Type I and Type II errors? Make sure to state your null hypothesis for this situation when discussing error
